Marley (2012)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1183919/

This documentary left me feeling like I knew a lot more about Bob Marley, but didn’t actually know him any better.  A multitude of mostly unrelentingly adoring interviews with friends and family and loads of great gig footage, but too long and overly interspersed with assorted “inspirational” imagery.

Fair Game (2010)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0977855/

An examination of the justification (or lack thereof) for the Iraq war.  The movie takes a personal perspective (that of Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame), therefore the political and military issues are covered almost superficially.  Pretty good, but not much better than just reading about it all on Wikipedia.

The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1259521/

Scary, clever, and funny: all good qualities for a horror film.  What the film lacks in blood-curdling terror it makes up for with its unorthodox take on the genre and its tight, wittily self-aware dialogue.  I don’t want to give too much away; just go and see it!

Headhunters (2011)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1614989/

This altogether odd Norwegian thriller reaches almost Fargo-esque levels of weird.  An inherently interesting story is infused with eerie ambience and some full-blown violence – creepy but darkly comic in parts. The line between citizen and criminal blurs as the protagonist repeatedly displays impressive levels of self-preservation. Highly recommended.

Mirror Mirror (2012)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1667353/

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, which is the shittest film of them all?... why it's this one, of course! Utterly indefensible: terrible acting, terrible costumes, terrible sets, terrible script and terrible butchery of the fairy tale.  Avoid at all costs.
